Manchester United's rather underwhelming pre-season comes to an end tonight when they face Sevilla. Out of six pre-season games so far, they have won two, drawn two, and lost two. At least David Moyes is showing he can make the team consistent.
After that, they face Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield, the FA's curtain-raiser for the season ahead. While their pre-season results may have been less than inspiring, it shouldn't be too much to ask for United to take home the first trophy of Moyes' reign... Should it?
I mean, it's not like Wigan beat Manchester City to win the FA Cu... Ah.
United odds-on
Even with their less than impressive recent form, United look a safe bet to win this one. That's not where you'll win the big money though, as they are best-priced at 1/3 with Coral. The draw is 5/1 with Betfred, while a Wigan win looks distinctly unlikely, at 11/1 with Ladbrokes.
A handicap bet looks good for your best chance of making some decent money. Manchester United -2 at 2/1 with Paddy Power is promising. For those who don't understand handicap betting, basically this means that United would have to score at least three more goals than Wigan to win the bet. Given Wigan's defence was shaky last season, and looking at United's wealth of forward firepower, we recommend this one.
No room for Roo
Given Wayne Rooney's public desire to get as far away from Manchester as he can, we think it's safe to say he probably won't be in the squad on Sunday.
So, for goalscorers, Danny Welbeck for Anytime Goalscorer at 7/4 with SkyBet looks like a decent shout. With Wayne playing the transfer game, this is young Welbeck's chance to step up and prove he can fill the void left by the Liverpudlian. Welbeck should get a lot more playing time this season, which hopefully for him should translate into more goals.
Robin Van Persie for First Goalscorer at 4/1 with BetVictor looks decent as well. The Dutchman will want to start the season with a bang, and after watching him last term, there's no reason to suggest he won't.
Whitewashing for Wigan?
The United 3-0 win is 15/2 with William Hill, and we think this could be one to watch. If you fancy the margin, but not the scoreline, the United win by three goals is 9/2 with Bet365.
Paddy Power are offering a nice little money-back offer as well if Robin Van Persie scores last, which would definitely be worth taking advantage of by using our tip for a United handicap win.
