An action packed weekend of quality flat racing features the rescheduled Investec Derby and Investec Oaks from Epsom whilst Sandown provides one of the most star laden British Champions Series clashes in recent years as the legendary Enable takes on the impressive winner of the recent Coronation Cup, Ghaiyyath in the Coral Eclipse.
We’ll preview the three Grade One races and cast our eye over the major players.
First off, the mouth-watering clash between Enable and Ghaiyyath: has the Godolphin rising star got what it takes to do battle with the might of Enable?
THE CORAL ECLIPSE, 1535 SANDOWN, SUNDAY 5TH JULY
ENABLE
The John Gosden trained dual winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is reported to be in good form in preparation for another crack at the Longchamp classic in October where the filly just missed out on the hat trick last year, beaten narrowly by Waldgeist.
She was scheduled to return for the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot although this was eventually ruled out as coming too soon.
However, connections feel that starting her season on a similar pattern to last year seems the sensible option.
Not surprisingly, she is a short priced favourite to repeat last year’s success at 5/4 with Unibet.
GHAIYYATH
This Godolphin owned 5 year old trained by Charlie Appleby has shown immense improvement this season as demonstrated by his convincing 3 length victory over Anthony Van Dyck in The Coronation Cup at Newmarket earlier this month.
More is expected from this exciting horse and if he is able to maintain his relentless galloping style, he could give Enable something to think about despite the 3ib pull in the weights favouring Enable.
11/4 best with Betfair, Paddy Power and Betfred
OTHERS
Lord North (11/2 Betfred) has reasonable claims after his Prince Of Wales Stakes victory at Royal Ascot whilst Japan (11/2 Unibet) trained by Aiden O’Brien was below par at Ascot last time out and will need to improve to figure here.
Eight runners expected to go to post so the each way opportunity reaches out to the Japanese entry Deirdre (25/1 Betfair, Paddy Power) who won the Nassau Stakes last year.
THE INVESTEC OAKS, 1540 EPSOM, SATURDAY 4TH JULY
LOVE
Fresh off the heels of her brilliant 1000 Guineas success, the Aiden O’Brien trained Love is a hot favourite (11/8 William Hill, Betfair, Paddy Power) to give the Ballydoyle handler an eight success in this race.
The daughter of Galileo ran supreme at Newmarket, travelled well and won the race in complete control over her rivals.
She should handle the extended distance at Epsom based on her finish at Newmarket.
FRANKLY DARLING
A daughter of Frankel, Frankly Darling trained by John Gosden is a confirmed stayer at the extended 1 mile 4-furlong distance and should be the main danger to Love.
Form wise she is solid enough having won the Grade 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot despite pulling hard in the race. The step up in class should not be a problem.
9/4 best with Bet365, William Hill, Betfair.
OTHERS
Aiden O’Brien has 3 more entries including Peaceful, Ennistymon and Passion of whom Ennistymon (10/1 Coral) represents decent each way interest after her excellent second to Frankly Darling in the Ascot race.
THE INVESTEC DERBY, 1655 EPSOM, SATURDAY 4TH JULY
ENGLISH KING
Most of the news concerning the Derby ante post favourite English King in recent days has been the subject of partner jockey.
The Andrew Balding trained son of Camelot has attracted plenty of money since the switch from Tom Marquand to Frankie Dettori was announced last week.
English King was very impressive when winning the Lingfield Derby Trial earlier in June and warrants a great deal of respect and the booking of the experienced Dettori is obviously a big plus.
11/4 best with Betfred.
KAMEKO
The 2000 Guineas winner will be keeping the romantics happy by taking The Triple Crown route and there is plenty of optimism that he will not be hindered by a little extra although in terms of breeding, it is uncharted territory whether he can stay up to 1 mile 4 furlongs.
He impressed in a recent gallop at Kempton and if he can stay the trip he has every chance of winning.
4/1 best with William Hill, Bet Victor, Unibet
RUSSIAN EMPEROR
The Ballydoyle chief representative is Russian Emperor who stayed on impressively in the Hampton Court Stakes at Ascot.
Sure to improve for that run and looks to be each way bet of the race.
7/1 best with Unibet and playing 4 places.
