The greatest tennis tournament starts on Monday (1st July) as Wimbledon 2019 kicks off. The third Grand Slam event of the year means powerful serving and volleying from the grass courts of SW19. Before you place a bet on Wimbledon 2019 we've picked out some recommended tennis bets for you to have a flutter on!
When is Wimbledon 2019?
Starting on Monday 1st July 2019 until 14th July 2019.
What's New at Wimbledon this year?
- More prize money for 2019! Now's there's £38 million prize money fund to go round.
- Tie breaks in the final sets! If the score gets to 12-12 games in the final set, a tie break will played to decide the winner.
- Start time of play for the outside courts is 11am.
- Grounds capacity at Wimbledon is now 42,000.
Can Federer Win Wimbledon 2019?
Roger Federer comes into Wimbledon 2019 as a controversial 2nd seed ahead of Rafa Nadal (seeded 3rd). Roger Federer bids to win a ninth Wimbledon title, a win which would make him the oldest man to win a Grand Slam event.
Federer is second favourite with Bet Victor offering 7/2 odds Roger to win the tournament. Federer will be 38 in August and while the superstar Swiss has been a consistent performer this year, I have concerns over a two week, five set format, whether Federer has enough in the tank to take another Grand Slam. Wimbledon certainly represents Federer's best chance at another Grand Slam and there's no doubt this is the event Fed's camp will be targeting.
Federer won Halle for a tenth time last week beating Goffin 7-6 and 6-1. It's difficult to write off the Swiss master, but age waits for no man and at 37 I think Novak and Rafa could well take advantage in the latter stages. Federer clearly is a grass court specialist, although has only won Wmbledon once (in 2017) in the last 6 years.
Despite the fact I don't fancy Federer to win Wimbledon, with no Novak Djokovic until the final I actually quiet like the odds of Federer to reach the Semi-Final and Final. Remember we have to go back to 2013 to find a year that Federer didn't at least make the quarter final. A bet on Federer to reach the Semi-Final or to win his quarter of the draw (Coral offering 4/6!) is the most sensible way to bet on Federer this year!
1st Bet:
Roger Federer: Quarter 4 Winner @ 4/6 - Coral!
Best Long Shot Bet of Wimbledon 2019?
Wimbledon tennis betting has been hard for long shot betting in recent years certainly in terms of the tournament winner market. In the last 20 years arguably the only big shock winner was Goran Ivanisevic in 2001 (if you can call that a shock!).
If you really are after a long shot winner in the men's draw I would suggest considering Canadian, Felix Auger-Aliassime (33/1 with Unibet) or Matteo Berrettini (70/1 with Unibet)! Both are young and just at the start of their career, but if there was ever a time to step, Wimbledon is that time! Milos Raonic is a dangerous player with a huge serve and Unibet are offering 40/1 on 2016 losing finalist. Having said that, I don't see a shock winner emerging this year, and Paddy Power's 3/10 odds of no first winner looks a dead cert as you can get!
So where is the long shot betting value at Wimbledon then? I like the the look of the most tournament aces betting markets as it can keep some interest throughout the tournament and is a kind of proxy bet on a players progress at Wimbledon. I like the look of Marin Cilic (5/1), Roger Federer (18/1) and Feliciano Lopez (33/1) - all with Paddy Power who are currently the only bookie offering such odds.
Cilic (hence the odds) is the more likely bet on most aces as the Croat is likely to go deep into the tournament. Lopez is a dark horse and will be riding high after winning the singles and doubles titles at Queens Club last week. Lopez is 37 and father time is against him, but the Spaniard is a very competent grass court player who can easily progress to the last 8 or even further. If Lopez can do that, he should come close to the top of the aces standings at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Federer is likely to progress to deep into the tournament and give the accuracy of Swiss's serve it will be no surprise if he ranks highly on aces. Federer will be consistent with aces, but it's unlikely we'll see a succession of dominating aces. Also Federer is more likely to win the early rounds in 3 sets with minimal disruption which gives him less game time to serve ace after ace.
I think a bet on Cilic and and small bet on Lopez for most aces is the way to go!
2nd Bet:
Marin Cilic: Most Tournament Aces @ 5/1 - Paddy Power!
3rd Bet:
Feliciano Lopez: Most Tournament Aces @ 33/1 - Paddy Power!
Who will Win Wimbledon 2019?
So we know from the seeding that Rafa Nadal is likely to need to beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic if he is to claim the 2019 Wimbledon crown. This reflects in the odds with Rafa trading as 3rd favourite at 11/2 with Coral, just behind Roger Federer (7/2 with Bet Victor) and Djokovic (13/8 with Betfred).
As I mentioned above the top four in Men's tennis has dominated Wimbledon (and the Grand Slams for that matter) for many years. Even the most contrarian tennis bettor would struggle to make a rational argument to pick out a player out of the top 3 seeds to triumph at SW19.
Given Rafa's draw and overall grass court record I'm not so keen on backing the Spaniard at the current odds. Rafa is without a doubt a king on clay, but grass is quite literally a whole different ball game. Rafa has only reached the final in one of the last eight years at Wimbledon. Rafa is suspect to an early round exit and it wouldn't be a massive shock if Nadal didn't reach the second week of Wimbledon.
Those reading from the start and concentrating will have worked out by the power of deduction, that as i have ruled out Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, as well as any other outsiders that means there's one man left; Novak Djokovic!
Novak Djokovic is perhaps overlooked with media and crowd admiration as Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer appear to be favoured worldwide crowd favourites. Because of that Djokovic arguably doesn't receive the praise he deserves. Djokovic already has 15 Grand Slams, one of only eight players to have won hold all four Grand Slams in the same year and already has four Wimbledon wins! Another Wimbledon glory will surely move Djokovic to legend status!
Can Novak eclipse Rafa and Federer in terms of Grand Slams and praise!? Maybe, maybe not, but Novak Djokovic is the man you should backing at Wimbledon 2019, get on that 13/8 with Betfred! Djokovic is a very well justified favourite and assuming the Serb stays healthy he should win!
