Tikaboo son! Five awesome volleys

Fulham's first two goals on Monday night were a bit special. Without a doubt, the volley is one of the hardest things to pull off in football: it is a combination of timing, technique, and pure power.

Twitter was awash with people calling Kasami's goal the best they've ever seen. While it was Van Basten-esque in its execution and beauty, I'm not convinced.

Here are my top five volleys of all time. If you don't agree, don't hesitate to let us know what goals you would put in below!

5. Wayne Rooney vs Newcastle

Back when Wayne Rooney was still billed as England’s next great hope – actually, he may not have hit the heights we thought he would, but he is still our great hope – he was wowing the world with feats of extraordinary skill and brutish power.

This goal is an example of both. The timing of this goal is sublime: instead of waiting for the ball, he powers through it, sending it spinning into the top right-hand corner of the Newcastle goal.

One of the best volleys ever, let alone in Premier League history.

4. Maxi Rodriguez vs Mexico

I remember watching this game, and it will forever stick in the mind because of this extra-time goal, which is undoubtedly one of the best World Cup goals of all time.

Receiving a long cross-field pass from a team-mate, Rodriguez takes the ball on his chest, and watching the ball all the time as it falls, hits it with his left foot from just outside the area…

The rest, as they say, is history.

3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs England

If it weren’t for two of my favourite goals of all time at numbers one and two on this list, Ibrahimovic would have taken home the coveted prize (I hope he still shows up for the awards ceremony: his invite is in the post…).

Only a world-class footballer like Ibrahimovic could have pulled this off. But then, I’m not sure there are many who share his flair for the audacious and unthinkable.

Joe Hart’s header away was poor, but the power and accuracy of the bicycle kick volley… A once in a lifetime goal.

2. Robin van Persie vs Charlton

Every time I see this goal, I have to really concentrate on what’s happening.

Because for one second, Robin van Persie isn’t in the picture, and the next, he’s scoring an outrageous volley.

He arrives so quickly at the ball, and then contorts himself into a coiled spring, with all the energy focused on the ball.

Then BOOM! Top corner, thank you very much.

1. Zinedine Zidane vs Bayer Leverkusen

My favourite ever player and my favourite ever goal.

This goal was not just a stunning finish (which it was, just look at it!). It also was the winning goal of the 2002 Champions League final.

To pull out that finish, in the final of one of the biggest sporting tournaments on earth…

Greatest volley ever, ‘nuff said.
