With less than one week to go until the start of Cheltenham Festival 2024, we check out the possibilities of which races during the four days offer the best hopes of a Cheltenham banker bet.
The key to a good Cheltenham banker is not necessarily the good form and ability of the horse itself, although this is significant of course.
However, the key factor to a good Cheltenham banker is assessing the quality of the opposition compared to the race favourite in question. Therefore, some readers might be surprised to see horses like El Fabiolo not included in this list.
This is simply due to the fact that although El Fabiolo is a worthy favourite for The Champion Chase, the threat of Jonbon is too great a risk. Banker races are definitely not races where a potential match is on the cards.
The first day looks the best banker day of the week with three going to post that we have pinpointed.
We check out the five of the best bankers’ bets with our partner firms, Bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports. All advertised odds come with the benefit of Non-Runner No Bet: NRNB.
More offers and previews for Cheltenham Festival 2024 here.
Banker 1: Ballyburn, The Supreme Novices Hurdle, 1330 Cheltenham, Tuesday 12th March
The main sticking point with this race is working out the challenge of where Willie Mullins is gong to declare his intended runners. Mullins is weighing up whether to send this talented novice hurdler down the Gallagher Novices Hurdle (Baring Bingham Novices) or Supreme Novices route.
However, recent betting activity and talk from the County Carlow yard is suggesting heavily that the Tuesday 2-mile race is more likely. If that is the case, the race is set up for Ballyburn to make this a winning start for favourite backers.
Evens with Betfred and NRNB could look particularly good odds indeed.
Banker 2: State Man, The Champion Hurdle, 1530 Cheltenham, Tuesday 12th March
The news of the withdrawal of Constitution Hill did very little to change the complexion of this race in terms of potential banker material. Last year’s runner-up and now firm favourite State Man is some way ahead of his rivals based on performances this season.
Many believe he is an improved horse and might have given Constitution Hill a run for his money. He should not be concerned regarding talk of Irish Point reportedly heading for this race instead of The Stayers Hurdle as this Willie Mullins trained 7-year-old is race fit and will take all the beating in this renewal of the Champion Hurdle.
Best odds 2/5 with William Hill and Betfred with NRNB.
Banker 3: Lossiemouth, The Mares Hurdle, 1610 Cheltenham, Tuesday 12th March
Last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner trained by Willie Mullins is simply far above the field in this renewal of The Mares Hurdle on Day 1 of The Cheltenham Festival.
Made rivals look very ordinary indeed in the recently held International Hurdle over course and distance and is bound to come on further for that one. Horse hails from a team with an exemplary record in this race.
4/7 best with Bet365 with NRNB.
Banker 4: Sir Gino, The Triumph Hurdle, 1330 Cheltenham, Friday 15th March
It's a rare thing to see a British trained horse as a banker at The Cheltenham Festival. However, Nicky Henderson has unleashed something incredibly special in the shape of Sir Gino.
Really impressed with his emphatic victory in The JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham Trials Day back in January and is sure to improve further for that run.
The recently held Dublin racing festival did not produce anything that suggested that Sir Gino had anything to fear.
4/6 best with Bet365, Betfred and Boylesports with NRNB.
Banker 5: Dinoblue, The Mares Chase, 1650 Cheltenham, Friday 15th March
Trained by Willie Mullins and owned by JP McManus, this mare really impressed with a sold win in the Grade 1 Paddy's Rewards Club Chase over Christmas and nothing was lost with a 8 length defeat to the mighty El Fabiolo in The Ladbrokes Dublin Chase.
Dinoblue should easily have the measure of nearest rival and last year’s runner-up, Allegorie De Vassy.
Best odds available 10/11 with NRNB at Bet365, William Hill, Bet Victor, Betfred and Boylesports.
