The Cheltenham Festival is packed full of big field handicaps throughout the four day meeting. Picking the winners in these mightily competitive races is extremely challenging!
The formbook can be thrown out of the window especially if there is a change in the going or the handicapper has missed a progressive sort who dramatically improves from their last run.
We’ve sorted through the Cheltenham Festival handicap fields and selected what we think are five of the best Cheltenham Festival handicap bets of the week.
We’ll also guide you to the best price, each way offers and if possible the firms which offer Non Runner No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed.
First off, a horse with Cheltenham form and expecting to put in a bold run in The Ultima Handicap Chase on Day One!
KILDISART: The Ultima Handicap Chase, 1450 Cheltenham, Day One
This Ben Pauling 8 year old had a superb season last year, winning at Cheltenham on Trials Day in the novices’ handicap and following this up with a creditable 4th in the JLT Novices Chase behind Defi Du Seuil.
He went back handicapping at Aintree and obliged with a thumping win over useful performer Mister Malarkey.
He’s taken time to warm to things this season but showed signs that he is coming into form with a noticeable staying performance in a decent handicap at Kempton last time out behind Mister Malarkey.
Kildisart now goes into the Ultima very well handicapped and I expect him to return to the kind of performances we saw last season.
Has been very well backed in the last week and now is 9/1 best with Betfred (NRNB and places paid 1-5 at 1/5 odds).
HOLD THE NOTE: The Northern Trust Company Novices' Handicap Chase, 1650 Cheltenham, Day One
We’ve also selected this Mick Channon 6 year old in our Best Bets Cheltenham Acca article mainly down to his remarkable consistency.
We expect him to be prominent and has to make the each way short list in this highly competitive novice handicap chase.
8/1 with Bet365 (NRNB, Best Odds Guaranteed), Betfair (NRNB, places 1-5), Paddy Power (NRNB, places 1-5), Betfred (NRNB, places 1-5).
SPIRITOFTHEGAMES: The Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase, 1610 Cheltenham, Day Three
This Dan Skelton trained 8 year old was a bit sleepy at the start of this season when fancied for the early big Cheltenham handicaps, including The Paddy Power Gold Cup where he went off 2nd favourite but failed to complete.
However, he has come on leaps and bounds since then, being runner up to Warthog in The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup and finishing runner up in the Trials Day handicap at Cheltenham.
Spiritofthegames is also featured in our Cheltenham Festival 2020 Long Shots preview!
Still well handicapped for an each way at 14/1 with Bet365 (NRNB, Best Odds Guaranteed), Betfred (NRNB, each way places 1-5)
PLAN OF ATTACK, The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Riders' Handicap Chase, 1730 Cheltenham, Day Three
Plan of Attack is a progressive sort, trained by Henry De Bromhead and has been widely mentioned by various pundits on Cheltenham Festival preview shows up and down the country.
He has had two good runs this season including a win at Aintree last October and goes into the Kim Muir with a good third behind Roaring Bull at Leopardstown. Sure to improve for a trainer who looks set to have an excellent Festival.
10/1 with Betfair (NRNB, places 1-5) and Paddy Power (NRNB, places 1-5)
MICK PASTOR, The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, 1650 Cheltenham, Day Three
Mick Pastor, trained by Paul Nicholls and owned by JP McManus looks a very smart French recruit who made an impressive debut when winning at Auteuil.
The horse didn’t take too well to the testing conditions when running at Cheltenham for the first time last November but certainly made amends with an effortless success in a listed event at Ludlow in January.
Ground should dry up a bit by Thursday which should suit the horse better and is sure to improve for this run.
8/1 with Bet365 with Best Odds Guaranteed and Non Runner No Bet.
