The last classic of the season, The Cazoo St Leger Stakes, takes place at Doncaster this Saturday. The final leg of the British Triple Crown is market led by the Charlie Appleby trained New London who on paper looks the one to beat.
We assess the top four races of the day at Doncaster and seek out the best bets, provided by our partner firms, Bet365, William Hill, Betfred, Bet Victor and Boylesports. Our four choices can form a Lucky 15 or Yankee bet!
Race 1: 1345 The Coral Portland Handicap
This massively competitive sprint handicap has a host of chances and looks like a tricky puzzle to solve.
Whenthedealisdone trained by Roger Teal leads the market at 13/2 (Betfred) and comes here on the back of a very convincing win at Ascot from last Saturday.
However this looks a much tougher contest and with an extra 3ibs, he is not an enticing bet at those odds. More value can be found with Lequinto trained by Tony Carroll.
The 5 year old has been downgraded in distance throughout the season and having won twice at 6f, connections are chancing their arm with the minimum distance. Could go well at 14/1 with Bet365, Bet Victor and Betfred.
Race 2: 1420 The Coral Champagne Stakes
Silver Knott (6/4 William Hill) for owners Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby has been improving all season as a 2 year old, his latest run in a Group 3 listed race at Ascot where he ran out a comfortable winner.
Biggest dangers would probably be his own stable mate Victory Dance or the Aiden O’Brien entry, Greenland who comfortably won a listed race at Roscommon last time out and should improve. Selection: Silver Knott 6/4 William Hill
Race 3: 1455 The Cazoo Park Stakes
Race favourite Kinross is a worthy favourite for trainer Ralph Beckett especially considering the fashion in which he won his last race at York last month.
He will take some beating but I think some value can be had with Chindit who has a course and distance win going back to last March. He’s had two tough races in top company in his last two outings so a return to a course where he has tasted victory might bring on some improvement.
His trainer Richard Hannon also has a good record at the track. Selection: Chindit 11/2 William Hill, Boylesports.
Race 4: 1530 THE CAZOO ST LEGER STAKES
New London
The final classic of the season, the third leg of the British Triple Crown of flat racing has a strong favourite in the form of New London trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin.
His last two runs have been impressive, landing a top class handicap at Newmarket whilst winning fairly comfortably with something to spare in a Group 3 event at Glorious Goodwood latest. This is another step up in trip but I don’t envisage any stamina issues. 4/5 Boylesports
Eldar Eldarov
Comes into this based on his hard fought win in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot back in June. The Roger Varian trained horse was soundly beaten in the grade one Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamps back in July but should be good enough to have a major say in this, despite being a little exposed. 5/1 with Bet365 and William Hill.
Haskoy
A very interesting entry from the Ralph Beckett yard. Just two career runs so far with the latest win at York very impressive indeed as the filly recovered from a poor start to narrowly beat Time Lock. Sure to improve for this and can take advantage of the 3ib weight allowance for fillies in this kind of race. 8/1 Betfred, Bet365.
The Rest
Hoo Ya Mal (7/1 Bet365, Betfred) has claims on best form whilst Zechariah looks a decent each way proposition based on his latest Newbury Group 3 effort where he won comfortably by 4 lengths. Ballydoyle have two entries in the shape of Bluegrass and Emily Dickinson who are both in with a squeak if they can produce their best form.
Verdict
The favourite, New London, will be tough to get past but doesn’t look great value at odds on. The selection therefore goes to the filly Haskoy who looks very unexposed and could be anything based on her two decent runs so far.
