Despite losing to a resurgent Ghaiyyath in the recently raced Coral Eclipse at Sandown, the Gosden team are ready to resume Enable’s season with a crack at completing a third victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot this Saturday.
However, she will face no less that 6 rivals from the Aiden O’Brien team, which includes the likes of Magical, Japan and last year’s Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck.
Enable will go off a short priced favourite although the Ballydoyle team will be confident of springing a relative shock with the formidable team they are representing.
It’s a cracking card for this Saturday’s Ascot meeting and we’ll also take a look at the big handicap, The Moet And Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap).
THE KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH QIPCO STAKES, 1545 ASCOT, SATURDAY 25TH JULY, ITV 1
ENABLE
The John Gosden trained enigma will attempt an unprecedented third victory in this race, having taken this in 2017 and 2019 renewals.
Her defeat to Ghaiyyath in the Coral Eclipse can very much be excused: she ran a gallant race in second and will no doubt come on for that run.
This race is possibly easier as Ghaiyyath is clearly turning out to be something special this season.
No value to be had here unsurprisingly and the betting opportunity will clearly come from the forecast bet.
8/13 best with Betfair and Paddy Power
MAGICAL
Aiden O’Brien literally brings the remaining field.
Magical is arguably the strongest of these having recently won the Group 1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh very comfortably.
The QIPCO Champion Stakes winner is extremely well regarded by the Ballydoyle team this season, believing her to have improved considerably over the winter.
The distance will not be a problem.
4/1 best with William Hill
JAPAN
The King Edward VII Stakes winner just failed to see out the trip in The Coral Eclipse last time out but ran very creditably to get within 3 lengths of Ghaiyyath.
Has every chance if she can improve a little more.
5/1 best with Betfair and Paddy Power
THE REST
With only 7 going to post, the each way potential is drastically reduced and it will be a major shock if the race does not go to one of the first three in the betting. Anthony Van Dyck could be interesting at 16/1 (Bet365) if he can produce his 2019 Derby winning form.
THE MOET AND CHANDON INTERNATIONAL STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP)
The big 7f handicap earlier in the afternoon looks to be a very competitive betting heat although the front two in the market are certainly dominating the early exchanges.
BLUE MIST
This Roger Charlton trained 5 year old was desperately unlucky last time out when favourite for the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot.
Missing the break, he never got a clear run but still managed to stay on to get within 4 lengths of the eventual winner.
Much more expected and he looks well handicapped at his current mark of 95.
5/1 best with Betfair and Paddy Power offering 5 places for each way bets.
EBURY
Ebury has some decent form at Ascot having ran well in a handicap there last month and winning a listed event there last September.
Would not have to improve a great deal to get involved here and will appreciate any lively going.
8/1 best with Betfair and Paddy Power offering 5 places for each way bets.
MUTAMAASIK
Has reasonable claims based on a decent third in an Ascot handicap last month.
Brilliant last season, rising up through the ranks with four straight wins on the bounce on turf and all weather tracks.
Definitely on the each way short list.
14/1 best with William Hill.
RECAP
Enable should take all the beating in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes despite the improvement demonstrated by nearest rival Magical. However, very little betting value is on offer and the forecast bet for Enable to beat Magical should be seriously considered.
In the big handicap, there are plenty in with a shout. I quite like the look of Mutamaasik based on his brilliant form of last season and providing the handicapper hasn’t got the better of him, he represents a good each way value bet.
